As a researcher and hypnotherapist I have worked with people who claimed to have been abducted by extraterrestrials. I have interviewed UFO researchers, scientists, authors, and people who claim to have secret information. Physical evidence seems to support many case histories, though some experiences may actually be caused by dreams, mental problems, media indoctrination, or misinterpretation of what the person has seen. All leave an imprint on the psyche of the person, or persons (multiple abductions involved). Most countries have reports of alien abductions. They occur in large cities as well as the rural areas. Abductions occur at any time of the day or night.

People who believe they've been abducted by aliens have always resided at the farthest fringes of science, and the recent claim by a UFO cult known as the Raelians that they had cloned a human being does little to endear abductees to the mainstream. The sect's leader, Rael, maintains that he was plucked from a volcano by almond-eyed aliens who granted him an audience with Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad, each of whom confirmed that humans are descended from extraterrestrials.

I have frequently reviewed the concept of UFO abductions through skeptical eyes. Admittedly, it is hard enough to accept the idea of UFOs as otherworldly craft, let alone the act of people being taken aboard them. During the light of day, the thought of UFO abductions seems laughable, a far-fetched speculation on which we can conjecture as we please and then conveniently shelve once the discussion is over. But as we laugh on the outside, is it not possible that we are really whistling in the dark--deep, down inside? As various case histories have shown, abductions often take place late at night, removed from the crowds. They are carried out in an insidiously quiet, almost subliminal fashion, which to most of us just doesn't seem real. Sometimes, even to the alleged victims, the recall of their own experiences seems like the fading remnants of some bad dream, hard to focus on and, perhaps, better left forgotten.
