This study demonstrates that all of the
"rod" pictures on Jose Escamilla's
www.roswellrod.com site show a "rod"
length-to-speed correlation that is
consistent with the motion blur pattern
created by a flying insect, if the insect
is videographed with a CCD camera using
either 1/60 or 1/100 second exposures.
The site also presents pictures of
motion-blurred insects showing this same
"rod-like" length-to-speed pattern, and
showing that flapping insect wings can
duplicate undulating or sinusoidal "rod"
wing patterns when shot at these slow
shutter speeds. Conclusion: Escamilla's
"rods" are motion-blurred flying insects.
Rods are insects caught in the act of flying by a video camera. Some hoaxers or very imaginative people have been maintaining that rods are actually some sort of unknown life form of alien origin. But, according to Doug Yanega of the Entomology Department at the University of California at Riverside and a member of the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board, rods are
