Our mission is to protect, preserve, and distribute for study samples from the Moon, Mars, and interplanetary space in support of solar system exploration.

The HITF has two primary functions: (1) research and development of advanced lightweight shielding for spacecraft. (2) Meteoroid and orbital debris threat assessments of spacecraft, including the Shuttle and International Space Station.

Established in September 1961 as NASA's primary center for: design, development and testing of spacecraft and associated systems for human flight; selection and training of astronauts; planning and conducting human space flight missions; and extensive participation in the medical, engineering scientific experiments carried aboard apace flights.

Through research on ancient rocks, modern hot springs, and Mars meteorites, the Institute is dedicated to identifying specific properties of a rock, soil, or other samples which indicate that biological activity is occurring or has occurred.
