MUFON Has Lost Its Way

Reviewed by: Flieger356, (Modified: May 8 2011 4:13PM)

I attended a MUFON conference this weekend in the hopes that I would learn more about UFOs and the beings behind them. To my surprise I found that MUFON has become an umbrella organization for all manner of fringe groups and dodgy researchers. What did the day's schedule include, you might ask? The Loch Ness monster, ten foot long lizards in the DC suburbs, the Mothman. Yes, there was some intriguing information put out on UFO sightings, but there was nothing truly earth shattering. One would do as well perusing YouTube videos of actual sightings. There was a talk about alien abduction from the head of a family claiming to be multi-generational abductees. But this was so unfocussed and vague on specifics that I found myself yawning for it to end. Are they true abductees? Perhaps. Do they know the reason for their abductions? Not a clue. Do they have any insights to impart? The closest he came was when he said that the head aliens, the ones who appeared to be in charge of the operation, didn't seem to give a damn about the humans and never interacted with them once. If anything he sensed outright contempt form the. That's reassuring.

One of the most pathetic moments came early in the day when one of the speakers, a grey bearded man (they're ALL greybeards!), bleated: Where are all the young people? This place should be packed with people busting down the doors to get in. Why is this, he went on? The answer was obvious to me, at least. Look at the site of the conference. Lake Smith Mountain Lake in rural SW Virginia! Jeez, do you expect college or high school students to drive 5-6 hours to get there and then pay between $100-180 a night for a room at a very pricey resort? At the end of the school year? During finals week? And if they do come, would they learn anything new? Nope. Not a thing. It's the same old stuff that people have been reporting for decades. Silver discs, plasma probes, etc. And then there was the analysis of the aliens' motivations, like anyone has a clue what makes them tick. How many times must we hear that the aliens are a sickly species who need a dose of our good old human emotions to revive their flagging will to live? I mean, really. That's it? Here we have a space faring species (or many of them) who are able to traverse interstellar space in real time and they are said to come all the way to earth to take some of our DNA to splice into their own because they're sickly? And they have to do this countless times over many decades? Sorry, but I've read that book and seen that crappy TV series. And if you disagree with this line of reasoning, they will come down on you. Hard.

Oh, one last thing. Most of the people in MUFON are really little better than hard core religious conservatives. They believe in reincarnation, the soul, the hereafter, near death experiences, and many of the same things one associates with christian fundamentalists. In the end I had to leave.

I understand why young people wouldn't want to bother with this organization. In this era of instant communication, you can learn more about UFOs on your computer than you can from any of these old fashioned types. MUFON really does seem like a relic from a past era.
