In the long history of man’s search for the missing link between man and ape, many have speculated that the mysterious creature may in fact be hiding right under our noses. Some claim this link has already been found by intrepid explorers of the nation’s wilderness.

This creature is called the Bigfoot in America, Sasquatch in Canada, the Yeti in Malaysia, Mapinguary in Brazil, as well as regional names such as the Windigo, Jersey Devil, Skunk Ape and many more.

What exactly is this creature and does this creature actually exist? The only way to answer that is to discover stories, look for reports and examine any legitimate scientific evidence that claims to have been found.

In short Bigfoot enthusiasts describe the Bigfoot as a race of ape or primate that lives in the heavily forested and unexplored regions of the world. This species is said to also exhibit human traits, much more so than our closest relatives that have been discovered so far, such as monkeys and gorillas. These creatures are said to stand upright, be covered in a dark fur and adults are said to be 6 to 8 feet tall. The discovery of this creature would not only be stupendous to the scientific community and the world at large, but also help to validate the theory of evolution created by scientific pioneer Charles Darwin.

Unfortunately the mere idea of discovering something so monumental often leads researches and enthusiast to get carried away in the excitement, often seeing things where there aren’t any, or grandly exaggerating stories, to down right fabricating information and evidence. This situation also unfortunately attracts a large number of weirdoes, charlatans, con artists and goofs who want to cash in on the excitement and possible discovery of real proof.

There are also factions among the believers of Bigfoot. One of the wilder theories held by one group is that the Sasquatch is in fact a race of advanced alien beings who have evolved beyond all of the problems of man, living in perfect harmony with nature and technology on their planet. Part of this advanced culture would involve evolving beyond the point of needing clothing by the body growing hair. In this theory believers suggest that man is actually at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to evolution and that many animals on this Earth have evolved beyond man. They believe that the Sasquatch come in flying saucers and monitor Earth, but do not openly reveal themselves to us because they fear we are too barbaric. Although they may be right about many animals being smarter than us, the rest of the theory seems to be pure insanity and this is just one of many niche groups that believe in the Bigfoot.

Because there is no clear, valuable, and legitimate unified lobby of scientists and believers the majority of this group is unreliable for factual or fact based information.

Many writers, scientists, philosophers, and self-described experts have been quick to dismiss the claims of Sasquatch sightings as hoaxes or hallucinations and that the theory itself is purely preposterous. Unfortunately for this group the loudest protestors against the possibility of the creature existing are also in many cases so arrogant that they refuse to even view any alleged evidence or commit to doing any of their own research. This refusal to disprove believers makes the anti-bigfoot group no more reliable than the pro-bigfoot sources for information.

Many skeptical experts felt the same way in centuries past about other creatures. Another mythical and legendary beast believed by the world to be a fairy tale was the Gorilla. It was not until the late 1800’s, when civilization began to grow rapidly and man began to clear-cut and develop the land in areas of Africa and Brazil that Gorilla’s themselves were confirmed to be real. Prior to this Gorilla’s had not been catalogued by scientists as a scientific fact and official species on this Earth. Today new species are still being discovered in those regions on a regular basis. As much as we like to believe that the world is entirely known to us and that there are no mysteries left, that simply isn’t the case. The truth of the matter is that there is still a very large portion of the world that remains undiscovered and unexplored by man. There are even regions in the U.S. and Canada that remain unknown to us.

Part of the misconception and disbelief with the public is caused by the discovery of the Sasquatch being associated with the theory of evolution. The majority of the world’s population misunderstands the meaning of the theory of evolution and the misconceptions are often spread by the media. Misinformation is also spread by fake experts who misuse and misquote the theory. The common misconception is that monkeys evolved into man and that the “missing link” is some creature somewhere in between man and monkey. People who believe this inaccuracy often believe that discovering this creature in the middle will prove the theory of evolution.

In reality the theory of evolution states that in the past there may have been some mysterious creature that inhabited most of the Earth. The theory states that a portion of the population of this animal may have migrated to one area and over time due to climate and other factors this portion of the species may have evolved into what we now know as the ape family of animals. Another portion of this animals’ population, or tribe, may have migrated to another area and when left there over time they may have evolved into man. So the theory of evolution is not that man evolved from monkeys, but that apes and man may have both evolved from the same creature that has so far been undiscovered. Many Bigfoot believers feel that Bigfoot is this mystery creature that man and ape evolved from.

Skeptics often openly defy believers by claiming that if the creature was real that there would be some physical evidence and there is none, so it must be imaginary. On the contrary however, 100’s of samples of hair, feces, footprints and tree markings are recorded, filed, and cataloged by legitimate science labs all over the world. These samples are listed as coming from an animal that is either unidentifiable or undiscovered by man. It is also important to note that most modern land animals do not leave any type of fossil or physical remains behind after they die. The entire body will biodegrade back into the Earth over time or possibly be consumed by other wild animals. Modern day surface soil conditions are rarely in the right circumstances to create fossils.

There is no reason to believe that there are not more species left to be discovered by man, possibly even within civilized countries and among any number of species yet to be discovered there is no reason to believe that an ape-like species such as the Bigfoot could not be among them.

Is it out there for sure? We’ll never know one way or another until at least one group, either pro-Bigfoot or anti-Bigfoot, gets their act together and presents a unified and legitimate voice to the scientific community and the media.

One was captured alive in the Fraser Canyon on the railway line back at the turn of the century. A picture of it was printed in the Victoria, British Columbia newspaper of the day called the Victoria Colonist.

It was a small one and ended up in the hands of a man who put it in the side show of a circus. So it was not treated very well and it is doubtful it would have lived very long under such conditions.

I've seen the actual newspaper article, so it really did happen and the article is archived at the newspaper, which is now called the Victoria Times Colonist.

Hope that is helpful.

In actuality there are many sightings of these elusive creatures in the harrison hot springs/harrison lake area of BC can.
The bigfoot stories have their origins here in Thompsons diaries which tell of a hairy beast which howled and threw rocks at their camp all night long....way back when he was checking out the fraser and thompson rivers...
The Stolo natives may be a fountain of information on such a creature should one inquire of them too.....
If im not mistaken your captured big foot was a young boy of that race.....his fate ive forgotten.....
British Columbia has untravelled widerness mere miles from downtown vancouver, and the Tales of big foot abound in more than one locale....the sunshine coast too,has tales of them....
And the great boreal forest of the hinterland is virtually uncharted in places still....

Yes, he was a young one. They tied him up and threw him in a box car and continued on to Vancouver. Its too bad he ended up in a side show, they should have just let him go home.

The closest I ever got to one of these guys was on Vancouver Island up the west coast.

The unknowns that dwell in the BC wilderness are quite incredible, but not too surprising considering the vast amount of wilderness that still exists.

Yes, still lots of unwalked real estate to explore, but I'm a bit past my exploring years and quite happy for someone else to have a go at it.

The west side of the Columbia River is the place I'd be taking a walk. Some interesting adventures await anyone who takes that route.

Once took a trip to KLeena -Kleen and ended up skidding out of contol on that horrible road and ended up in a ditch. A bigfoot sighting might have made up for it though.

I went to Willow Creek years ago to go tubing on the river. When we were getting out of the car there was a lot of commotion with press. Not huge, but not just a guy with a video camera...

There were these kids kneeling on the river bank with a giant white plaster foot...they had found a track a few days earllier.

I was mad with excitement...but I never did see one. You can imagine how close I was.

Y'all,

Yuma

I would LOVE to know for certain they do or don't exist, but I think it's ludicrous to even consider shooting one to have "proof." If they're real, then they must be very intelligent--to stay out of our way most of the time. And they must bury their dead, because we never find carcasses.

One of my favorite stories about the Bigfoot I ever read was a report from a very early logging camp.

There was a series of disturbances where the equipment was getting turned over and destroyed. Some sort of steam-tank (steam donkey) was turned over and it took a crew of men to turn upright. It was turned over a second time by the unknown assailiants.

This was before the Bigfoots took a totally pacifist stance aginst the Old Grown logging of the Ancient Red Wood forest...where they happen to live...you know it they are real...

There have been sightings reported in the mountains of W.VA, KY, GA, and some in OK as well.

Very elusive group of beings.

I read several years ago an account of in the 70s when a small child was lost in the woods somewhere in Colorado (I think). She said for two nights something that "smelled awful" came and cuddled her in the pitch dark, and kept her from freezing to death. She was always so frightened it was going to eat her, she never tried to feel it or look at it. It always cuddled her from behind, and in the morning she'd find berries and leaves it had left for her.

As an adult, when she looks back on that traumatic outing, she does so with great love for that creature. She says she believes if it had been a bear, if would have eaten her; but instead, it had huge hairy arms it wrapped around her while she shook until she got warm and fell asleep. She had not heard of "Big Foot" when she was so young. And when she tried to tell people about the creature upon her rescue, they thought she was delirious.
