SETI: are claiming that "a Mystery Signal Has Been Picked Up By a Giant Radio-Telescope in Puerto Rico." Across the globe, researchers searching for signs of life in space were abuzz this week with word that a mystery signal has been picked up by a giant radio-telescope in Puerto Rico.
Dan Wertheimer of the UC Berkeley SETI Project, said the dilemma is the fact that the signal may never be completely decoded.
"We'll know something's out there, but we won't know much about their civilization."

Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute, said he was hopeful that future technical advances will eventually point scientists in the right direction.

"I'm cautiously optimistic we'll find something by the year 2025," Shostak said.

I here now that scientists are scheduled to gather to determine what the return message should be?

According to Drake Equation, astronomers estimate there are an estimated 10,000 intelligent civilizations just in our galaxy, but many scientists urge caution when it comes to initiating contact.
Will it be foolish to answer?
Dangerous for earth to assume we know the risks?

Do we answer? and What do we say?

Interesting for sure, but what the heck is a mystery signal?

Seth is sure about 2025.......we'll find something? I was under the impression that signals from the stars took light years to reach us and light years for a reply to reach them, whoever they are.

Not the best way to run a communications network, unless of course they get with it and use a sensor like the one they have at the Waro station in Australia, which receives signals from stars simultaneously......real time information. And all they have is a 3 meter dish. But Seth is not jumping out of his chair to join in the fun, which is a little disapointing, but its his chair.

If we pick up signals, you can bet the people who sent it are (1) either no longer alive, or (2) if they are, they have a much longer life span than we do.

This project is a waste of time, energy and money, in my honest opinion. I used to donate to SETI ... but that was in the OLD days ... before I realized that interesting signals already received were being stifled by the NSA and the Pentagon. FOIA documents obtained a few years ago showed that some twenty years back there were several signals which were considered to be 'probably direct attempts to communicate with Earth' and the NSA marched right in, took the data tapes, and no one has ever heard a word or been allowed to ask about those transmissions, since. When I realized we will NEVER be given the truth from any of these agencies, I stopped contributing.

Is'nt this whats gonna happen every time? It like the release of these government files. I doubt if the real !juicy ones" will ever see the light of day.

Seth is sure about 2025
Your right David. how can they be so specific, or do they know something already. After all this time for an organisation to come out with a "make or break" statement (with a time factor added) is a bit of a risk. its putting out a pedestal that they will be cetain to get knocked off.

Although Scientists did confirm there was an anomalous radio signal and reported it late last year.

NOW, SETI@home lead scientist Dan Werthimer clarifies, "although this pulse is not well understood..." it may have a natural origin.
For a major Org'n to act so quickly and without some sort of support analysis is not very professional at all?

SETI Institute Chief Scientist Seth Shostak says "the highly energetic and brief signal at first excited some researchers, who at the time thought it may be a candidate ET signal. It was received not at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, as reported, but rather in Australia".
The signal has not been confirmed as any sign of extra-terrestrial intelligence, although the Allen array in California is now actively searching for more of these signals.

My God its Roswell again...its there, it's not.....it's this and then it's that...its puerto rico then its Australia, not even close
