Oh, I'm so completely in love with this cartoon:

Lambert, The Sheepish Lion

A FRIENDLY YET AHH.. SHEEPISH NATION

Image
Barack Obama at the Rijksmuseum inspecting historical 16th century 'abjuration' and early 'dutch-american friendship' documents, showing the ancient bond between our two peoples.

In the Netherlands the monopoly of force lies with our government, allowing only army and police to carry arms. Just last 24th of March US president Obama took some hours away from attending the nuclear summit at The Hague to visit the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, where Dutch PM Mark Rutte began the tour by showing our 1581 Act of Abjuration as well as a document establishing early Dutch-American friendship. Here's a quote, eerily reminiscent of that later great American declaration:

All these considerations give us more than sufficient reason to renounce the King of Spain, and seek some other powerful and more gracious prince to take us under his protection.

These historical documents, together with our Constitution, represent not so much a source for America's Declaration of Independence and Constitution, as a mysterious democratic mindmeld. America and the Netherlands were both founded on a rejection of royal tyranny, choosing a path of individual rights and national law instead. There's a major difference. We Dutch don't have this roar:

Amendment II of the US Constitution

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Regrettably our (analog) constitutional protection is more of a bleat:

Constitution of The Netherlands Article 11 (excerpt)

Everyone shall have the right to inviolability of his person

Difference means BIG difference between American and Dutch citizens when a criminal tries to do sum violence on their persons. The US Constitution places (if you so decide) A GUN in the American defenders hand. The Dutch are left holding their 'right' when under attack.

ENTER GOLDIES JEWELRY STORE AT DEURNE, NETHERLANDS

"Two burglars were shot to death Friday evening by the wife of the owner of a jewelry store in Deurne they tried to rob. During the incident the owner also suffered a gunshot wound to his hand.

Police report that the robbers barged into the shop around 5.40pm and held up the owner Willy Sanders. Unbeknownst to them though, Willy’s wife Marina saw the robbery unfold through security camera that were linked to the couple’s house.

Neighbors say Marina hopped in her car, drove to the store and lay serious siege to the men holding up her husband; they did not survive it."

Dutch police have cordoned off Goldies Jewelry Store (brightly lit storefront at center) to investigate it as a crime scene.

Marina girl, if you happen to read this, you are a goddam lioness,
no "Meh" heard whatsoever, you have become the Lambert of Dutch jewellers and all law-abiding citizens, I tell'ya!! Without yet knowing all the facts of the ongoing investigation, at least I deeply sympathize with the longsuffering of jewelry store owners, who have been getting totally robbed and vandalized, beaten, shot, murdered and seriously injured by ruthless, gunwaving gangsters for years.

Times seem to be changing for the Netherlands. I believe there is a groundswell of support for the courageous lady jeweller coming to her besieged husband's aid. With us ordinary folk, but also in government and law enforcement circles. One positive indicator is that the couple was quickly released from police custody, with the prosecutor's office issuing a statement there was a high probability of legal Self Defense applying in this case.

I suspect that The Netherlands very slowly is following America's lead on the need and right for responsible gun ownership. Reaching the level of a version of Second Amendment seems an almost impossible hurdle to take for now. But, helped by the amazing courage of one woman, we seem to have gone from Meh to Meow, close to a little Roar perhaps today.

Some 40 protesters doing a "meh-eh-eh" thing at Deurne, objecting against fatally shooting the two firearm wielding jewelry store robbers. Did they think robbing jewellers is an honorable profession, and robbers have a right to be safe during their 'work'? Of course these fellers have the RIGHT to protest, godblessum, although I fervently wish they could be arrested for the horrifically botched spelling on their placards.
