After a short night of telescope star-gazing my friend and I packed up our gear in the barn. Upon our return outside I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, what seemed like an abnormally bright star. I looked up, saw a bright blue/white light, and exclaimed “holy sh*t!!!” due to it being brighter than any other object I’ve seen all night. The light then seemed to diminish and move away. Here are the facts: it was around 3:30am on July 11, 2005 in Dundee, Michigan. It was spotted in the area of the star Vega, and was traveling in a north-north west direction. We’re not sure if it was always moving or if it started moving right after I spotted it. At first I thought it could’ve been a “shooting star,” but it didn’t behave like one. The light lasted only a couple seconds, and looked the color of those xenon headlamps. I think it faded away, but my friend thinks it could have been a directional light pointed towards us, and then pointed away. After the light it just looked like a satellite traveling through the sky at a constant, fast speed. We observed the sky for the next 30 minutes and observed 3 faint objects moving through the sky, but these were probably satellites. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?? Can this be explained?

I'm going to reply to my own thread, and say: "sorry," I did a bit of quick research and found it was an Iridium flare.
