There is a widespread belief that alien beings have traveled to earth from some other planet and are doing reproductive experiments on a chosen few. Despite the incredible nature of this belief and a lack of credible supportive evidence, a cult has grown up around it. According to a Gallup poll done at the end of the twentieth century, about one-third of Americans believe aliens have visited us, an increase of 5% over the previous decade.

As a researcher and hypnotherapist I have worked with people who claimed to have been abducted by extraterrestrials. I have interviewed UFO researchers, scientists, authors, and people who claim to have secret information. Physical evidence seems to support many case histories, though some experiences may actually be caused by dreams, mental problems, media indoctrination, or misinterpretation of what the person has seen. All leave an imprint on the psyche of the person, or persons (multiple abductions involved). Most countries have reports of alien abductions. They occur in large cities as well as the rural areas. Abductions occur at any time of the day or night.

Imagine yourself traveling home from work one night and your car engine suddenly dies. You pull over, get out to find what the trouble is, and suddenly find yourself bathed in a bright light. You look up and notice that a strange craft is hovering above you. The next moment you are in a room filled with several strange alien creatures These strange alien creatures are now physically examining you. You then lose consciousness. The next thing you remember is that your are standing back on the roadside beside your car.

June 25, 2004 -- Recalling a traumatic memory may provoke severe distress in people, even if the memory may be a product of their own imagination, according to a new study. The study showed that people who claim to have been abducted by aliens show the same signs of distress, such as increased heart rate, sweating, and muscle tension, shown by people recalling more plausible traumatic events, such as wartime experiences.

Extraterrestrials regularly abduct humans from Earth, often performing bizarre surgeries and experiments on their subjects, according to the popular and profitable "nonfiction" offered by major publishing houses. Books by John Fuller, Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs, Whitley Strieber, and others have helped shape contemporary belief in alien beings.

Most abductees report being taken into spaceships from their homes or from their automobiles while driving. Once in the ship, "the atmosphere may be dank, cool, and occasionally even foul-smelling" (p. 36). Their abductors typically "appear as tall or short luminous entities that may be translucent, or at least not altogether solid. Reptilian creatures have been seen....But by far the most common entity observed are the small ‘grays,’ humanoid beings three to four feet in height....

The 10-part miniseries dramatizes more than five decades of alien-abduction and UFO mythology. It clocks in at 20 hours. Ten directors worked on it. The budget was a reported $40 million. (CBS) A study suggests the oft-reported sensation of leaving the body during a brush with death may have a simple explanation in the body itself. "Out-of-body" and "near-death" experiences - in which people resuscitated on the operating table speak of being drawn toward a brilliant light, or looking down on their own bodies - may be influenced by a portion of the brain misfiring under stress, the study suggests.

He grew up to become his own improbable tale: Advertisement He's a sociology professor at the conservative and Baptist Baylor University, a Presbyterian who has a particular interest in people who say they are UFO abductees or victims of religion-linked ritual abuse. His study of the two groups was published in a recent issue of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.

The UFO phenomenon is extraordinarily complex, however the main focus is undeniably face-to-face encounters or the onboard UFO experience. Still, when people think of these types of close encounters, they often assume that the experience is a terrifying event during which the unwilling victim is laid out on a table and examined by emotionless gray-type ETs. While I believe these types of encounters do happen, this is only a small part of the UFO experience. In reality, people experience a much wider variety of encounters. Contrary to popular opinion, onboard UFO experiences are not always involuntary and terrifying. Many people experience encounters during which they are actually helped or healed. There seems to be multiple reasons why people are contacted by aliens.

This article proposes an integrated psychodynamic perspective to account in part for a variety of similarities between near-death experiences and UFO abductions. The psychodynamic psychology of these experiences implies that their "realness" is mainly a function of that psychology, rather than primarily of an objectifiable external reality. Clinical and research examples highlight the theoretical and practical usefulness of this model

I have frequently reviewed the concept of UFO abductions through skeptical eyes. Admittedly, it is hard enough to accept the idea of UFOs as otherworldly craft, let alone the act of people being taken aboard them. During the light of day, the thought of UFO abductions seems laughable, a far-fetched speculation on which we can conjecture as we please and then conveniently shelve once the discussion is over. But as we laugh on the outside, is it not possible that we are really whistling in the dark--deep, down inside? As various case histories have shown, abductions often take place late at night, removed from the crowds. They are carried out in an insidiously quiet, almost subliminal fashion, which to most of us just doesn't seem real. Sometimes, even to the alleged victims, the recall of their own experiences seems like the fading remnants of some bad dream, hard to focus on and, perhaps, better left forgotten.

There is a fairly substantial list of books that claim to document UFO sightings. In recent years, the alleged UFO crash in Roswell New Mexico in 1947 has tended to dominate popular discussions in this area, so I have listed several books that describe the Roswell incident. The other, recent, popular theme has been so-called alien abductions, but one can separate beliefs in UFOs and beliefs that people have been abducted by aliens and returned to earth. While beliefs in UFOs is certainly necessary for beliefs in alien abductions, the former does not entail the latter.
